Ideas win awards at IIM-A

AHMEDABAD: Many out-of-the-box ideas by school students, including a crutch with shock absorber by Archana Konwar (Class VII), a young girl from Dhemaji in Assam; a shoe with mini vacuum cleaner by T Chris Ananth (Class I) from Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu; and a system to prevent car drivers from using mobile phones while driving by Divyam Gupta (Class X) from Bulandshahr in UP were displayed on the campus of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A) on Monday.

These prototypes were winners at IGNITE 10, which is a yearly national competition for students up to class XII based on technological ideas and innovations organized by National Innovation Foundation (NIF) in partnership with Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), Navodaya Vidyala Samiti, various state education boards, and Society for Research and Initiatives in Sustainable Technologies and Institutions (SRISTI), and Everonn Education Limited.

The former president of the country APJ Abdul Kalam handed over the awards to the winning students on Monday. Professor at IIM-A and executive vice chairperson at NIF Anil K Gupta said, "While NIF has helped in making the prototypes of the ideas of these students selected as winners, it has also filed for patents of these cases in the names of the students, and handed over the patent draft with application number to them."

A huge cache of arms and explosives, believed to have been hidden by ULFA conduits, has been recovered from a school here.

Two AK 47 assault rifles, three grenades, five kgs of explosives, two walkie talkies, one flash gun, two detonators, six magazines and 125 ammunition were recovered late last night from the premises of Assamese Navodaya Vidayalaya School, SP A R Mawthoh said.

The recovery followed spotting a suitcase left behind by some unidentified people after being chsed by some students near the school. Police found three powerful grenades and 125 live ammunition from the suitcase.

Later, a search conducted led to the recovery of the arms, wrapped in plastic, ADG (special branch) SK Jain told PTI. Some arms were kept in a suitcase and others buried underground, he said.

According to documents seized the arms and explosives had been delivered to one Young Changma by top ULFA commander Drishti Rajkhowa way back in May 13, 1998.

Changma was asked to keep the weapons at a secret place, but police were yet to confirm as to how long the explosives were lying there.

SP Mawthoh said that preliminary investigation revealed that the cache has been lying undiscovered at the spot for a "reasonably good period, may be several years."

Dimapur DEO informs on school statistics

 Dimapur, October 28 (MExN): As per the order NO.SSA/NAGA/EMIS-DISE/2010-11 dated Kohima the 11th Oct 2010, Government of Nagaland; Department of School Education Nagaland, as per RTE Act all concerned school including Navodaya & Kendriya Vidilaya, CBSE, & ICSE affiliated that the department is concluding its annual collection of school statistics as on 31/10/10 relating to enrolment, teachers 7 infrastructure through District Information System for Education (DISE) formats which is mandatory throughout the country.
Hence, all private schools under Dimapur District are hereby requested to collect the said Formats from the office of DEO, Dimapur SSA SECTION first floor between 10 am to 2 pm. Distribution and Collection of the formats for Private Schools will be start from November 1 to 4, 2010 and last date of submission November 10, 2010.
All the Govt. Schools are informed to bring students attendance register for the year 2009 & 2010 with teachers’ particulars along with seal to their respective as follows: UBRC Kuda – November 1, 2010, from 9:00.am onward and EBRC Medziphema, Kushiabill and Dhansiripar –November 2, 2010 from 9:00 am onward.
Dimapur DEO in a press release has further requested tem to comply with the notification so as to avoid any untoward situation.
